Anime Reviews: Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei (2021). Maybe this is one of the most anticipated series anime fans this season. Satou Tsutomu’s popular light novel entitled “Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei”, or perhaps more popularly known by its English name “The Irregular at Magic High School” this season was adapted into anime. This series tells the story of a world at the end of the 21st century, where magic has turned into a sophisticated technology and has been widely used, especially for military purposes.

Training in the use of magic, its tools, and everything related to it has become an important public commodity. In this series, the story centers on two brothers Shiba Tatsuya and Shiba Miyuki, who are going through their high school years at a magic school. In this school, various problems and challenges come their way one by one, testing their maturity and magical abilities.

Synopsis Mahouka Koukou

Character Mahouka Koukou

Miyuki Shiba: Saori Hayami

Miyuki is a girl who enters Junior High School this spring and is placed in Course 1 above her class. He has an older brother named Tatsuya. Her beauty is almost mystical and her charm attracts the attention of many men and women. She adores her sister from the bottom of her heart and calls her “oniisama.” However, those feelings for him can be too much and sometimes out of control. It’s safe to say he has quite a sibling complex. Miyuki is an honor student with excellent grades and possesses an extraordinary amount of magic compared to others her age. On the other hand, his brother Tatsuya, who was placed in Course 2, was worried about being treated as an underachievement. Miyuki would not have any of that and was merciless to those who looked down on her brother.

Tatsuya Shiba: Yuichi Nakamura

Tatsuya attended Junior High School with his younger sister Miyuki. His written test scores, magic techniques, knowledge, and technical abilities far surpass that of ordinary high school students, but due to having poor practical skills, he was placed in Course 2. He is the eldest son of the Shiba family, one of the Ten Master Clans, and can use Strategic Grade magic like Regrowth and Material Burst. Due to a side effect of a certain experiment, he lost his ability to feel all kinds of strong emotions, except those related to his sister. He is a quiet person, unfriendly, and tends to give up when it comes to girls because he cannot understand their feelings.

Honoka Mitsui: Sora Amamiya

Honoka is a member of Class 1-A in Junior High School and is classmates with Miyuki. He is childhood friends with Shizuku and is a top-class honors student with excellent grades. He admired Miyuki after witnessing her extraordinary beauty and magical abilities at the entrance exam and decided that he wanted to be Miyuki’s friend. Honoka Mitsui’s surname means “well of light,” and as suggested, she is highly skilled with light-type magic. Apart from being a magician, she is an ordinary high school girl, who happens to have feelings for Tatsuya.

Shizuku Kitayama: Yuiko Tatsumi

Shizuku is Honoka’s childhood friend and Miyuki’s classmate. She was an honor student whose grades in practical skills were second only to Miyuki. He doesn’t talk much and keeps his temper, but secretly he hates losing. When it came to the Nine Schools Competition, his passion was second to none. Every year since he was a child, he would rush to watch the competition, hungry to be one of the students chosen to compete. Maybe because he was always around girls with beautiful styles like Honoka and Miyuki, but he seemed to be worried about the size of her breasts.

Amelia Eimi Akechi Goldie: Asuka Nishi

Amelia has striking red hair and is a member of Class 1-B. Her nickname is Eimi. She enjoys horseback riding and is the daughter of the Goldie family, an English noble family. He has a strong sense of justice and a straightforward personality to match. His ability to speak his mind and excellent communication skills, coupled with his cheerful and friendly personality, allows him to quickly make friends with anyone. He is a Course 1 mood maker, but sometimes he gets too carried away and annoys others.

Info Mahouka Koukou

The anime adaptation is being worked on by Madhouse (Fairy Tail. Naruto, Chihayafuru) together with Aniplex (Angel Beats!, Sword Art Online, Naruto). Running for 26 episodes (2 hours) with a length of 24 minutes per episode, this series was the first to be announced to last more than 1 season. In the hands of two studios that can be considered giants in the anime world, this series promises very good and stunning graphics and animations. The precise animation execution and sharpness of the images presented, make these anime graphics look like a real thing.

Coupled with a star-studded roster of staff and voice actors, such as Saori Hayami, Kimura Ryouhei, Nakamura Ryuuichi as voice actors, and Lisa and ELISA as theme songs, the beauty of this series is further enhanced. LiSA’s opening song injects passion and soul into the series’ story, bringing the anime’s action and science fiction atmosphere to life. At the end of each episode, ELISA’s melodious and solemn ending song is calmer for the tense atmosphere as well as a perfect story wrapper. The skills of the voice actors in processing their characters, also take part in bringing the romantic comedy presented by this series to life and bring the audience as if they were directly involved in every event, not just watching it through the screen.

Strengths and weaknesses

Likewise with this series, which in addition to having a myriad of advantages, also has some drawbacks, which turned out to be quite fatal. Like most novels that turn into anime, not all stories are shown in anime form. In short, they’re having story cuts. However, in this series, the number of stories that are cut is a bit too much, which makes many viewers confused about each term and abbreviation used in this anime, even though three short introductory episodes have been made that explain everything in general. The existence of these difficult terms is then added to the level of complexity of the story which is quite high, which makes those who have not read the original work more confused when watching this series. But, apart from that, in general, this adaptation can still be followed by the storyline quite well.

The moral message that can be learned from this series is the responsibility for the position one has. Every position, every authority has its challenges. To become strong and professional people, we must be able to face each challenge with a cool head, and full of responsibility. Undoubtedly, it will lead us to success, no matter how small it is. Also, this series teaches about the need to be humble and not overly proud of your abilities, because there are always people out there who are better than us, and arrogance will lead us to destruction more quickly.

Conclusion

This science fiction series, which is full of romantic comedies, can be said to be one of the most interesting series to watch this season, especially if you like incestuous romance. However, because of the comedy itself, plus the level of violence that is shown in this series, this anime is not recommended for viewers who are under the age of teenagers without adult assistance. For those who want to watch this anime, it is highly recommended to first watch the three short introductory episodes, entitled Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei – Yoku Wakaru Mahouka, which explains the various terms used in this anime.
