Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2.
Synopsys Uma Musume
The anime Uma Musume: Pretty Derby premiered in April 2018. The first season was done by studio P.A. Works and runs up to 13 episodes. This series was then continued with the Umayon spinoff which was made by studios DMM.futureworks and W-Toon Studio in the summer of 2020. The second season, which we are discussing this time, was aired last winter and worked on by a different studio, Studio Kai. Uma Musume also released the game on February 24, 2021, on mobile platforms and March 10 for PC which was done directly by Cygames.
One of the things that stands out about Uma Musume is the depth of its character. For those of you who may be very anti-moe anime, you should think again about this Uma Musume. There is quite a lot of modification anime that have been aired, such as Kancolle, Azur Lane, Girl’s Frontline, and the like. However, in terms of story quality, Uma Musume could be more top.
As previously mentioned, Uma Musume took the theme of a horse that was modified into a girl. However, the girls in Uma Musume are better than some of the previously mentioned anime. With the depth of the characters, the audience can know the background and motivation of each character to compete in the horse race.
Even the audience does not only see the depth of character from the main character, but also the supporting players. In this second season, the supporting characters get more screentime than the first season. speaking of figures, we will go into the second reason.
Review Uma Musume
For those of you who don’t like this type of anime, you must have saved a lot of stereotypes to refuse to watch it. Don’t think negatively first, I dare say this anime is not just ordinary moe-moe (even though this is an anime that relies on moe).
Indeed, there have been much modified anime such as Kancolle, Azur Lane, Girl’s Frontline, and the like. Seeing the title mentioned, I was a little hesitant to expect the quality of the story and the depth of character that could be displayed from the modification series. Let’s just survey anime viewers for a moment, do they know the story about Ashigara? My beloved Waifu Tone even only shows briefly. At least a character like Inazuma they could remember was a loli with the catchphrase ‘nanodesu’.
Unlike other modification anime, Uma Musume -specifically for the second season – provides what many other modification series have not managed to offer. The depth of character displayed in this season is even better than the first season. Starting from the main character who gets more rations, everything can be described very well so that the audience can understand the storyline. Other supporting characters such as Rice Shower, Mihono Bourbon, Twin Turbo, Nice Nature, Mejiro Palmer got very clear and weighty roles for the anime.
The interesting thing about the second season of Uma Musume is that the main character’s focus is different. In the first season, the audience was presented with two central characters in Special Week and Silence Suzuka. Meanwhile, in the second season, we focused on Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen.
This concept looks fresh because here the main character can be replaced by anyone. However, on the other hand, this concept can backfire if the execution fails. Fortunately, the studio was successful and even beyond expectations.
Even though Uma Musume season two looks perfect, there are still shortcomings such as some side characters who just pass by and the universe is quite chaotic. However, this anime is still worth watching, especially for fans who are anti-moe.
