Review Sonny Boy
In terms of plot, Sonny Boy is a mix between the manga The Drifting Classroom and the novel Lord of the Flies. Here the students are faced with a crisis that they must solve together. Plus the existence of several students who have superpowers, high school students are faced with the fact that they must create a system of society to ensure they can survive together. Here I can see what things the audience can expect from the Sonny Boy anime in the next episode.
First, this anime is a social commentary on how society is formed. Students’ efforts to create a set of rules and their legitimacy are arguably a small scale of how a country works. Functionality between student council members and rebellious students is the main focus of the storyline of the first two episodes of this anime. From the conflict, many philosophical things can be discussed. Starting from the justification for someone to be in power, to whether the majority vote is always absolute.
Second, Sonny Boy shows that the series will rely on the personalities of its characters to create conflict and drive the anime’s plot. In the first episode, there are some hints about the personality and different ways of thinking of each student. Rebellious students like Nozomi and Asakaze even though they refuse to follow the rules, don’t particularly bother other students.
They only feel that the rules made by the student council faction are arbitrary and have no justification. Meanwhile, one of the student council members named Hoshi has a way of thinking that in every group there must be someone who commands and is ruled. He then decided to manipulate a series of events that led to the election of the student leader in the first episode.
However, what attracted me to this anime apart from the philosophical debate and dynamics between characters was the creative freedom that studio Madhouse gave to director Shingo Natsume. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Sonny Boy is an experiment from Natsume as a director. Many directory decisions can be considered quite bold from the first episode of Sonny Boy.
